Why Choose Geography as a GCSE option? 'Geography is one of those richly comprehensive subjects whose relevance is all around us' (Michael Palin). Geography is the study of the physical (natural hazards, rivers, coasts) and human world (population change, development, cities). It links these in space and time, helping us to understand how and why the world is changing and to respond more intelligently to what is happening around us. In a globalised world, geography is a relevant, challenging and topical subject to study. A GCSE geographer will develop many key skills which are useful in the wider world and for employers, for example: decision-making, evaluating, understanding different people's points of view, carrying out enquiries, working in groups, collecting, processing and handling data, using maps, graphs and charts. Fieldwork is an essential part of the course and there will be an opportunity to attend a field trip to the River Holford in the Quantocks in Yr 10 and Bristol Harbourside in Yr 11. At GCSE we follow the new AQA course and begin the course half way through Yr 9. Why choose Geography at A-Level? The Geography team at Beechen Cliff have many years experience and a proven track record of strong results. We are committed to not only delivering up to date lessons in an engaging manner but also encouraging our students to become independent learners. We aim to retain the teaching and learning styles delivered lower down the school while at the same time preparing students for University level Geography. In Yr 12 we take a residential trip to South Devon, staying at the luxurious Colehayes Field Study Centre and carrying out fieldwork at various locations across the county. In addition to this we run a day trip to Three Cliffs Bay in the Gower. We also run a 6 day trip to Iceland to compliment the Tectonic Hazards unit. At A-Level we follow the new Edexcel course.
